Hocus PocusBoston University’s blog has footage of a low-speed, low-flying game of Quidditch, the game played in the Harry Potter series of books. I don’t know anything about Quidditch other than it involves nerdy kids rather than sexy witches zooming around on brooms, and that Harry Potter is some nerdy shit. From BU:

Katie Stack has been enchanted with Harry Potter and his magical escapades since the fourth grade. She spent hours reading the series and reenacting the boy wizard’s adventures with her friends.

She is in college now, but Stack (CAS’11) continues to live out her childhood fantasies. She plays Quidditch, the international sport of the wizarding world, which has players zooming around on broomsticks and using balls to score points and knock one another off course.

Finally, ultimate frisbee players have someone to laugh at.

Pavano threw 91 pitches over five innings, 54 of them for strikes, survived hitting two batters and set down eight of the final 12 batters he faced.

He also killed 10,000 Wookiees.

If Carl Pavano winds up being the shot in the arm the Yanks needed, I’m done with baseball. I can’t take it.

That’s No Moon!

DoctorD: CARL PAVANO PITCHES TOMORROW
J-Bla: man, taht’s like the death star entering orbit around alderaan
DoctorD: True, in that the death star is prone to blowing up hilariously at critical moments
J-Bla: i think the only way this is fitting is if he’s perfect through 7 and then his shoulder explodes
DoctorD: THIS FULLY OPERATIONAL CARL PAVANO
DoctorD: Then he has to throw a fastball into the stands and kill a thousand people

Also, on thinking about it, “operational” and “Carl Pavano” can be hilarious  in any number of ways. That’s how we roll. Subtle.

The first World of Warcraft Cinematic trailer set a bar that through today had been unmatched in my opinion.

With Warhammer Online receiving a massive amount of attention due to the lifting of the NDA in beta and it’s impending release I thought I’d offer up this.

The cinematic I just watched has raised the bar to a new level. This is, in my opinion, the best trailer, including Movies, I’ve ever seen.

At 4:31 I thought it might be too long but was left wanting more when it ended. I had some reservations about playing that are now gone. I’ll try it no matter what. Not because the movie is so cool, but because of the time and effort put into the cinematic that gives me hope the product will get the same love and attention.

Only our old nemesis could bring us back.

Renteria Versus Cabrera

Interesting article in ESPN The Magazine Of The TV Network about the long, complicated feud between Renteria and Cabrera. If you’re a journalism nerd like me, check out the companion piece on how the writer managed the story.

So, it’s been a bad start for Ghost Ride Da WHIP.

So bad I was actually contemplating picking up David Eckstein to fill in at Shortstop.

I know…

Suffice to say, with a winning percentage much closer to .000 than .500, it was time to blow up the outside world and scour the waiver wire for hot pickups.

So, here’s your slightly revised 2008 Ghost Ride Da WHIP

Analyzing Barry Zito

While watching this downright painful game, I came upon this particularly interesting post on how Barry Zito is unravelling. Please note it’s heavy on the stats and makes no measure of grit or uniform dirtiness.

Barry Zito just loaded the bases on walks, then got two outs, then Brandon Webb drove in the runs.

Barry Zito has just loaded the bases on walks.

He just got an ovation for throwing a strike to Snyder.

This is causing me acute physical pain. It’s like watching someone get a tooth pulled.
